11+ Non-Verbal Reasoning: Question Types, Common Mistakes and How to Improve
Non-Verbal Reasoning tests how a child spots patterns and relationships in shapes and images rather than in words or numbers. It's often described as the most trainable of the four 11+ subjects, because the skills involved respond very directly to structured practice. This guide covers the main question types, why practice matters so much here, and the mistakes that quietly cost children marks.
What Non-Verbal Reasoning tests
Non-Verbal Reasoning (often shortened to NVR) uses shapes, patterns and diagrams instead of words, and it's designed to assess a child's ability to reason logically without relying on language or vocabulary. Because it doesn't depend on reading ability, it's sometimes presented as a fairer measure of raw problem-solving skill, though in practice it's just as trainable through familiarity as any other 11+ subject.
NVR appears in most GL Assessment 11+ papers and in many CEM-style tests, and it also features heavily in the ISEB Common Pre-Test used by a large number of independent schools, where it's typically delivered as an adaptive online test that adjusts the difficulty of questions based on how the child is doing. The exact question types and their names vary a little between providers, but the underlying skills being tested are broadly consistent.
The main question types
Non-Verbal Reasoning papers typically draw from a set of recognised question formats, including:
• Shape sequences: a row of shapes changes according to a rule (rotating, growing, changing colour or adding elements), and the child must work out what comes next in the sequence.
• Rotation and reflection: identifying which shape is a rotated or mirrored version of a given shape, or spotting the odd one out among several rotated versions of what should be the same figure.
• Odd-one-out: given a set of shapes or small pictures, identifying the one that doesn't share a property (such as number of sides, symmetry, or shading) with the rest.
• Matrix or grid completion: a three-by-three or similar grid of shapes follows one or more rules across rows and down columns, with one cell left blank for the child to complete.
• Shape analogies: similar in structure to word analogies but using shapes — shape A relates to shape B in a certain way, and the child must apply the same relationship to shape C.
• Codes applied to shapes: similar to Verbal Reasoning letter codes, but the rule is applied to a shape's properties (size, shading, number of sides) rather than to letters.
• Nets and 3D shapes: working out which 3D shape a flat net would fold into, or vice versa — this type appears less often but does turn up in some papers.
Because there's no reading involved, instructions matter a great deal — a child who misreads what a question is actually asking (for example, looking for the odd one out when the task is to find the shape that continues a sequence) will get every question in that block wrong even if their reasoning is otherwise sound.
Why practice matters more than raw ability here
It's a common misconception that Non-Verbal Reasoning measures innate intelligence and therefore can't really be improved through practice. In reality, NVR responds extremely well to structured preparation, arguably more than any other 11+ subject, because the number of distinct question formats is relatively small and finite, and each one has a learnable method.
A child who has never seen a matrix completion question before has to work out, in the moment, both what the rules governing the grid might be and how to apply them — a genuinely hard cognitive task under time pressure. A child who has practised twenty or thirty matrix questions already knows to check rows and columns systematically for changes in shape, size, shading, rotation and position, and gets through the same question far faster and more accurately, not because they're more intelligent but because they know what to look for.
This is precisely why NVR scores tend to move quickly with focused practice in the early weeks of preparation, and it's also why it's risky to assume a child who scores poorly on an early diagnostic 'isn't a Non-Verbal Reasoning person' — very often what's missing is simply exposure to the question types and a systematic checking method, both of which can be taught.
Common mistakes children make
The most frequent mistake in NVR is rushing. Because the questions are visual rather than text-heavy, children often assume they can be solved at a glance, and jump to an answer after spotting just one pattern rather than checking whether that pattern actually holds across the whole sequence or grid. A shape sequence might change in two ways at once — rotating and changing shading, for example — and a child who only notices the rotation will pick a plausible-looking but wrong answer.
A closely related mistake, especially common in matrix questions, is not checking all the rules. A three-by-three grid can have a rule running along each row and a separate rule running down each column, and both need to hold true for the answer to be correct. Children who check only rows, or only the first row, will often eliminate the right answer or select a wrong one that satisfies just part of the pattern.
Other common errors include confusing rotation with reflection (a mirrored shape is not the same as a rotated one, and many wrong-answer options are designed specifically to catch this confusion), losing track of orientation in shapes with subtle asymmetry, and simply working too slowly because they're re-deriving the rule from scratch each time rather than recognising the question type quickly from prior practice.
The fix for nearly all of these is the same: slow down fractionally at the start of each question to identify what kind of question it is and what the full rule set might be, and build the habit of a quick systematic check (rows, then columns, then diagonals if relevant) before committing to an answer.
How to build NVR skill efficiently
Because NVR is so format-driven, working through each question type in isolation before mixing them together tends to work well, in the same way it does for Verbal Reasoning. Once a child is comfortable with, say, matrix completion specifically, timed mixed practice becomes valuable because it forces them to identify the question type quickly rather than relying on a heading or context to tell them.
Physical or on-screen practice with a wide variety of shape styles also matters, since some children get used to one workbook's particular visual style and then struggle when a different exam board presents shapes in an unfamiliar way. Common questions
It can absolutely be improved. NVR draws on a relatively small, well-defined set of question formats, and children who practise these regularly get faster and more accurate largely because they learn what to look for, not because their underlying intelligence changes. Early low scores usually reflect lack of exposure rather than a fixed ceiling.
Verbal Reasoning uses words, letters and numbers to test logical thinking, while Non-Verbal Reasoning uses shapes, patterns and diagrams for the same purpose. A child's reading ability matters for Verbal Reasoning but is largely irrelevant to Non-Verbal Reasoning, which is one reason the two subjects can produce quite different scores for the same child.
This is usually because a grid has more than one rule running through it at once — commonly one rule across each row and a different rule down each column — and only checking one direction leads to picking an answer that satisfies part of the pattern but not all of it.
